The Cold War saw numerous defections by both military as well as civilian pilots who "chose freedom" using a variety of aircraft for that purpose. Most defectors managed to make it over the fence but not all were that lucky. One of those on whom fortune turned her back was a Polish pilot by the name of Dionizy Bielanski. Below his tragic story is told utilising facts made public only a few years ago.
